Learn More About Hypnosis and Meditation

Definition of Affirmations

Affirmations are powerful statements positively worded and do not require a state of hypnosis.  All of PowerToUplift’s Affirmations are repeated in a variety of ways to anchor new positive beliefs.

Benefits of Affirmations

The benefits of affirmations are that these short recordings or scripts that you can listen to at any time during your actives.   By listening daily, affirmations reprogram thinking.

How are Affirmations different from Hypnosis?

Unlike hypnosis, affirmations are upbeat tempo, short, and do not require the relaxed state.  Affirmations take a principle and repeat intentions in various words locking in your intent.  Hearing and agreeing with an intention on a daily basis changes the brain. While affirmations are powerful, hypnosis works at an even deeper level of the subconscious but requires time to get into a relaxed state. Hypnosis is more powerful in changing behavior than affirmations; however, affirmations are a great tool to use in conjunction with hypnosis.  Many clients use affirmations during their activities such as work outs, driving, getting ready in the morning.

Definition of Meditation

Meditation is requires relaxed state of being where the client taps into information from its higher self.  Meditation requires no special training or advanced knowledge.  Anyone can meditate.  Guided meditation is helpful to get the mind out of the way to access your subconscious and what we call your Soul Self.  Quite often PowerToUplift’s hypnosis also uses meditation techniques, gaining information from yourself, to heal yourself.

Benefits of Meditation

The benefits of meditation are profound.  You are Soul.  You have a body.  As Soul, you have vast knowledge available to help you.  All you have to do is get your mind, or what we call the little self, out of the way.

How is Meditation different from Hypnosis

Meditation does not direct the client whereas hypnosis is directive.  Meditation gains knowledge from self.  Hypnosis is directive and requires agreement with intent to be effective. Meditation asks questions and provides answers only from within the client and often gives “Ah, Ha!” moments.  PowerToUplift’s hypnosis often uses meditation techniques to access information for real change to occur.

Definition of Hypnosis

Simply put, hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness characterized by extreme relaxation and heightened level of subconscious access and is directive in nature. Hypnosis requires agreement with intention of the hypnosis and trust in the Hypnotherapist.

Benefits of Hypnosis

The benefits of hypnosis are multi-dimensional, especially with PowerToUplift’s techniques.  Our hypnosis is only lightly directive, most of our hypnosis is given as open uplifting statements which allow the Client, from a Soul level, to choose the direction of growth and/or change.

Can Everyone Be Hypnotized?

Yes.  Hypnosis is a natural state we all go in and out of all day.  You are in control of how deep you go and a large factor rests in how much you trust the hypnotherapist.

Is Hypnosis Unsafe?

For most people, hypnosis is completely safe when performed by a qualified Hypnotherapist.  Hypnosis is not recommended for clients with psychological problems. If you are under the care of a doctor or mental health professional you must clear hypnosis use with them first.

Simple issues arise when hypnosis or affirmations are worded improperly. For example, if the intent is to remember your dreams, and the words being used in an affirmation or hypnosis say “You remember your dreams upon awakening” the client may find that they can only remember their dreams when they first get up. A better phrase would be “I remember my dreams any time I choose.”  For this reason, it is important to find a qualified Hypnotherapist whom you trust.

What does hypnosis feel like?

There are many misconceptions regarding hypnosis as a result of books, movies, and stage shows.  Hypnosis is a natural state we all go through in various levels throughout the day.  For example, dreaming, day dreams, fantasizes are all levels of altered states of consciousness also known as trance.

You know how when you are driving and lose track of time?  This is what it is like to be hypnotized. You are fully aware of what is going on, at some level.  Just like at some level you remembered how to drive the car, yet you were also daydreaming.  When we daydream, we are using our subconscious mind to visualize, sense, and or feel.

Can Hypnosis Make Me Do Things I Don’t Want?

No.  No one can make you do anything you do not already desiring to do.  That is why hypnosis does not work unless the intent of the hypnosis must match your deep desire. You must have complete trust in your hypnotherapist, without full trust, you will not allow yourself to go deep enough in your own subconscious.

We are all born with an internal Overseer mechanism.  This mechanism is always on.  No matter what directives you are given or how deep in trance you go, your internal mechanism will alert to anything you are not in agreement with.

For example, a client came to us with hesitation.  A previous hypnotherapist had suggested, while he was induced, he shave his mustache and change his glasses.  He was not in agreement with the intent as it was never discussed and immediately he regained full consciousness in protest. This was wrong for the therapist to do.  It is imperative that you are in agreement with the intent of the hypnosis, or it simply will not take hold. And once the trust is broken it may be very difficult, if not impossible, for the hypnotherapist to effect change.  Your overseer mechanism will block the hypnotherapist’s attempts.

How important is my desire?

Extremely! Your desire is tremendously important.   You must be in full agreement with the intent of the hypnosis.  For example, if your spouse is telling you that you need to quit smoking and maybe you should try hypnosis.  Save your money, because unless you really WANT to quit, you will just be wasting your dollars.  But if you want to quit and just don’t know how, hypnosis can completely alleviate your desire to smoke.

Will I lose Control?

No. No matter how deep you go into trance, you will not lose control and you will never do anything that is not in alignment with your core values.  As a matter of fact, you choose to relax and from there you choose how deep you go.  What you will lose is the mind chatter we all have during most of our day.  This mind chatter does not allow us to connect with our higher self.  Hypnosis thus helps us connect to our own higher self.

How do stage shows get people doing silly things?

Some stage shows have a few people planted; some do not.  Most shows use audience members.  They bring enough people on stage to insure they have at least a few good participants.  The people who are able to go deep enough into trance to behave like a chicken are one of two types they will keep on stage.  The first type person is the gregarious type who is normally the life of the party and is likely to act outrageous anyway, and the second type is the very quiet type who secretly or subconsciously desire to break out of their shell.  Either way, the acts performed on stage are in agreement with the participant's core values or they simply would not be hypnotizable.

Power of Hypnosis

The real power of hypnosis is within yourself, your own mind, your own willingness to change.  Hypnosis is a tool and just offers a way to get to where you desire to be. You are the real power behind hypnosis.

What is the difference between a hypnotist and a clinical hypnotherapist?

Training is the difference.  A hypnotist can be certified in a weekend course.  A Certified Hypnotherapist requires a minimum 200 hour training course.  And a Clinical Hypnotherapist requires a minimum 300 hours of training.  Marcella McMahon is a Clinical Hypnotherapists.

Can a Clinical Hypnotherapist Help with All Problems?

Of course not.  A hypnotherapist is not a doctor. Those with psychological problems should not use hypnosis.   The decision to use hypnosis as an adjunct to treatment can only be made by consultation with a qualified health care provider who knows the uses and limitations of clinical hypnosis.
